Slum Landlord Ordered to Live in Own Building

A Lakewood, Ohio, landlord has been ordered by a judge to house arrest in one of his derelict buildings until he makes the proper repairs. Lakewood Municipal Judge Patrick Carroll ordered Richard Naumann to live in his Lake Avenue apartment building -- which has no heat, hot water, operable stoves or ovens -- until proper repairs are made to the two buildings he owns.

Naumann, who will only be allowed to leave the building between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. for work, will also be outfitted with an electronic monitoring device on his ankle to ensure he abides by the judge's command, the newspaper said.

Plug-In Cars to be Tested in Toronto

The Toronto Star has an article on Mayor Miller's Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Pilot Project which is based on an innovative approach to reducing our fuel consumption and maybe getting rid of some smog. This is how the pilot project works. A bunch of hybrid cars will be converted into "plug-in" hybrid cars that can be recharged from the same outlet you put your toaster in. These converted cars, unlike regular hybrid vehicles, will rely mostly on electricity. They also get double the gas mileage of traditional hybrids (turns out regular hybrids can get much greener with a modified battery).These converted hybrids, ten of which will be tested for a year in Toronto, will go 50 km around the city with one charge and only a little gas. 200 vehicles could be part of the project by 2008.

A naked American tourist raised eyebrows when he went for a walk through Nuremberg, German and told police he thought this was acceptable behavior in Germany.

Many Germans enjoy nude sunbathing which is allowed in public parks. The 41-year-old was carrying his clothes in a bag when police stopped him Monday evening after complaints from pedestrians.

The tourist was not under the influence of drugs, said police. They made him get dressed and pay a 200 euro ($269) deposit pending his investigation for indecent behavior.

Premier Calls for Handgun Ban

Premier Dalton McGuinty wrote in an open letter to federal party leaders, urging them to push through proposed criminal justice legislation and implement a "real ban" on handguns. This followed a tragic high school shooting that claimed the life of a 15-year-old Toronto boy, Jordan Manners.

Currently, handguns in Canada are classified as either restricted or prohibited weapons. Canadians can receive a licence to own a restricted weapon if they can prove it's part of a gun collection or used for target practice or target-shooting competitions.

In 2005, handguns accounted for almost six in 10 firearm homicides, compared to one in four that involved rifles and handguns, according to Statistics Canada.

Of the 658 homicides reported by police last year, 222 were committed with a firearms, up from 173 in 2004.

If you're ever in the mood to get really nauseous off of car fumes, try standing close to the parking area of almost any Toronto strip mall. The idea that we have anti-idling by-laws will seem laughable after a few minutes. You'll notice shopper after shopper leave cars running while purchases are made. After a few minutes, you'll start hating most drivers. If you last even longer, you'll eventually pass out.To combat smog and other environmental nastiness, the Toronto Police are going on a four-day ticketing enforcement blitz. It's not much (what happens after four days?), but you can get the satisfaction of seeing SUV-owners idling in front of Starbucks get a ticket. Well, it isn't going to be that satisfying - the fine is only around $120 and, except during the blitz, is rarely enforced - the city only issued 66 tickets last year!

Closing Arguments in Alicia Ross Case

It's no secret Daniel Sylvester killed his neighbour Alicia Ross, but he never intended to, a defence lawyer stressed Thursday in closing arguments of his client's murder trial. David Hobson said in a Newmarket, Ont., courtroom that his client did not commit second-degree murder, but instead killed Ross on Aug. 17, 2005, in the heat of the moment.

Hobson said Thursday that the Crown is trying to build its case around the motion-sensor light on Ross's house that illuminated the path between her home and Sylvester's.

The light was off at the time of the attack, and the Crown is arguing Sylvester turned it off before assaulting Ross, proving he intended to kill her.

Don't rely on Ross's boyfriend, defence lawyer urges.

Hobson told jurors this argument is flimsy proof of premeditation, and argued that the Crown is building its case on a house of cards. He suggested it would be dangerous for jurors to accept the Crown's argument. Hobson also said police and the Crown made a grave mistake by relying on Ross's boyfriend, Sean Hines, as a witness. Because he was a suspect at one point, Hines is an unreliable witness with selfish motivation.

One of the Olsens lands a role on 'Weeds'

Mary-Kate Olsen is returning to television with a co-starring role on the dark comedy "Weeds." Weeds is one of the few television shows that I watch with any regularity.

Olsen will play Tara, a devoted Christian girl living in the newly developed megachurch community Majestic who becomes a love interest for Nancy Botwin's (Mary-Louise Parker) son Silas (Hunter Parrish). Olsen will appear in 10 of the 15 episodes of the show's third season. Parker plays a dope-selling suburban mom.

High School Goes Into Lockdown After Student Murdered

Astudent was shot and killed inside C.W. Jefferys on Wednesday. Police initially received reports of a drowning at the school pool at 2:35pm, but when they arrived they found a teenager suffering from a single bullet wound to the chest. The boy, who was found in a hallway, was without vital signs when discovered.

A science teacher performed CPR, but the teen, who was rushed to hospital, later passed away. He's been identified as 15-year-old Jordan Manners.

The school remained in lockdown for hours as heavily-armed agents combed classrooms.

Students finally left on buses for nearby Elia Middle School down the road just before the dinner hour and then home to their anxious parents.

Reports indicate an argument at a nearby plaza may have led to the shooting, but authorities won't confirm anything - including if they may know the name of a suspect or if there was more than one person involved.

Many fellow students have expressed it on a quickly devised page on the social network site Facebook, where students from across the city left words of condolences for the victim.

Gore Leaves Door Open

Al Gore was on Larry King the other night and was questioned about running for President. His evasiveness is becoming annoying. But I can see what he is doing. He has decided to declare on a certain date and no one is going to steer him from that date. The only problem is that by the time he "officially" joins the presidential race, the announcement will be anti-climatic. Here is what he said the other night.

GORE: But, yes, it's true, I have not made a so- called Sherman statement and ruled it out for all time. I see no reason or necessity to do that.

But that's not an effort to be coy or to prop the door open or to invite such speculation. Look, I don't know why it's ordained that one -- that as soon as one presidential campaign is over with, the next one begins right away. I'm one of those who doesn't like to see the Christmas goods put into storage right after Halloween.

KING: No, you don't. But -- and I don't mean to be coy, but why not take the Sherman approach? Why not say, I don't want to run, and if nominated, I won't serve?

GORE: Or whatever. Well, I see no reason to do that. Why would I do that?

KING: Because when you don't, you leave things open.

GORE: Well, I have not closed the door at some point in the future to consider being a candidate.

Toronto Cabs Aren't Going Green

Although New York's cabs are going green, Toronto is maybe 10 years away from introducing such dramatic change to an industry already suffering economically, according to Toronto councillor Howard Moscoe.

In New York, the city's fleet of yellow cabs will go entirely hybrid within five years, and all new taxis will have to meet emissions and mileage standards by next year, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced yesterday.

He may have a good point, a Prius in Canada will cost almost $40,000 for a cabbie. Though why stop at cabs, maybe the entire driving public should be pushed to hybrids.

Two teens are in hot water after police said they decided to return to a pool at the same hotel where they had robbed three people about 15 hours before.

The two women and a man were held up at gunpoint around 2 a.m. Saturday on the beach by Shorewood Villas on Hilton Head Island, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Capt. Toby McSwain said.

The robbers took cell phones, purses, wallets and cash before one of them pistol whipped the man, McSwain said.

The victims then saw the same two men again at their hotel Saturday afternoon and called police. “They were basically just hanging out at the pool,” McSwain said.

The gun deputies think was used in the robberies was found in a restroom trash can near the pool and other items taken were found on the beach, authorities said.

Brandon J. Brooks, 18, and Dillion Clark, 16, were charged with armed robbery. Brooks also was charged with carrying a firearm during a violent crime and misdemeanor marijuana possession.

We Need an Election Soon

The government is adrift as the Conservatives' minority enters its 16th month. The normal lifespan of a Parliamentary minority is just 18 months. As the government of Stephen Harper nears that milestone, the frays are beginning to show.

Just six months ago the Harper government appeared well and truly in charge of things. But what's left of its legislative agenda is now stalled by House of Commons committees controlled by the opposition, and the government's response is not to appeal to Canadians for a majority mandate, but rather to issue a 200- page instruction manual for its own committee chairs on how to be just as disruptive at hearings as Liberal, NDP and Bloc MPs.

Part of the problem is that the Conservatives efficiently blew through their election commitments in record time. So they really need a new mandate.

Researchers have found that seniors who participated in weight training not only improved muscle strength and endurance – they actually reversed some of the effects of aging in certain muscle tissue at the cellular level.

In a study published online in PLoS One – a journal of the Public Library of Science – the researchers found that energy-producing "mitochondria" in skeletal muscle cells can be revitalized with weight-training exercise, returning them to a state closer to those found in younger people.

What they found is that mitochondria which allow cells to use oxygen to convert fat, protein and carbohydrates into energy become less efficient as you get older. Exercise made aging mitochondria pattern back towards a younger person, almost reversing the aging signature, pretty much by 40, 45 years with six months of weight training.

Now when will they develop a way to grow back my hair.

Once again Toronto police are using surveillance video to assist in identifying a murder suspect.

The knapsack-toting man captured by surveillance cameras leaving the underground parking lot where multimillionaire philanthropist Glen Davis was gunned down Friday afternoon has been identified as a suspect, by homicide police this afternoon.

Police today released a video tracking the movements of the man, who police believe is in his mid-to-late twenties, in the underground parking garage near Eglinton Ave. East and Mount Pleasant Rd. Still images culled from the video surveillance cameras were released publicly over the weekend.

Davis was a philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to conservation and environmental causes, including World Wildlife Fund Canada.

Woman Drinks 12 Diet Cokes a Day

Amanda Sanchez, a 29-year-old working mother of two, is a self-professed Diet Coke junkie.

"It's my water. It keeps me going. It's the fluid that keeps me alive," Sanchez said. "I really think I am addicted. I really think it would be very hard for me to stop."

She drinks more than a case of Diet Coke a day, or 12 cans, almost one for every hour she is awake. While the drinks may be low in calories, they have plenty of caffeine, which can be addictive.

"People do indeed become addicted to caffeine very rapidly, and they also withdraw from caffeine very rapidly," said Dr. Harris Stratyner, an addiction specialist at Mount Sinai Medical Center. "It can make their sleep patterns disturbed. It can make them restless, wired, anxious." "There is some evidence that the acid load of soda, regular or diet, has an adverse affect on bone health," said Dr. David Katz, nutrition expert at the Yale School of Medicine. "I would be very worried that if you are drinking 12 cans a day, diet or regular, it's potentially going to do damage to your skeleton, and eventually that can be a very serious problem.

The Coca-Cola Company said it sees nothing wrong with drinking lots of Diet Coke. "Great taste. No calories. Wholesome ingredients. How could you drink too much?"

Some Serious Weirdos Out There

Here is another strong case supporting sterilization. A woman blames the devil and not her husband for severely burning their infant daughter after the 2-month-old was put in a microwave, a Houston television station reported.

Eva Marie Mauldin said Satan compelled her 19-year-old husband, Joshua Royce Mauldin, to microwave their daughter May 10 because the devil disapproved of Joshua's efforts to become a preacher.

"Satan saw my husband as a threat. Satan attacked him because he saw (Joshua) as a threat," Eva Mauldin told Houston television station KHOU-TV.

A Galveston County grand jury indicted Joshua Mauldin last week on child injury charges after hearing evidence that he placed his daughter in a motel microwave for 10 to 20 seconds.

The infant, Ana Marie, remains hospitalized. She suffered burns on the left side of her face and to her left hand, police said.

Meanwhile, Eva Mauldin has set up a MySpace page, "Joshua Mauldin is not a Monster," in hopes of defending her husband and making pleas for people to help her.

Twin brothers Raymon and Richard Miller are the father and uncle to a 3-year-old little girl. The problem is, they don't know which is which. Or who is who.

The identical Missouri twins say they were unknowingly having sex with the same woman. And according to the woman's testimony, she had sex with each man on the same day. Within hours of each other.

A paternity test in this case could not help. The test showed that both brothers have over a 99.9 percent probability of being the daddy— and neither one wants to pay the child support.

Trump Quits The Apprentice Well After Viewers

Property tycoon Donald Trump has quit his reality TV show The Apprentice after the program was left off of NBC's new primetime schedule. Trump was reportedly left fuming last week after the network's announcement, and has decided to pull The Apprentice altogether. The 60-year-old issued a statement on Friday saying he was "moving on" from the corporate-themed show to work on "a major new TV venture," but refused to reveal further details. The Apprentice debuted on American television in 2004 with 21 million viewers, but viewing figures dropped significantly in the five seasons which followed. There was a lot of desperate retooling for the last season which was shot in Los Angeles and began duplicating Survivor only making the show that much worse.

Not as cute as Knut

Bokito the 400 pound gorilla at the Roterdam Zoo isn't quite as cute as Knut the little polar bear at the Berlin Zoo. Bokito was even less adorable on Friday when he leapt over a moat surrounding and ran amok among the zoo's visitors.

Bokito grabbed a woman, dragged her with him briefly and bit her before barging into a restaurant. The poor woman is in hospital, where she is being treated for bite wounds and a broken arm and wrist. Injuries to her hand are actually quite serious and required surgery. Although in media interviews she says she still adores the gorilla.

Bokito was eventually shot with a sedative dart and recaptured.
