Man claims mullet discrimination
Having sported his mullet for almost a decade, David Hoogland said he was surprised when bouncers told him to leave Print Hall's rooftop bar on Friday night.
He had been drinking with fiancee Sarah Sorgiovanni and friends and said his hair had never been an issue before.
"I'm not in a gang, I don't have tattoos all over me, I'm just an everyday person," Mr Hoogland said.
"I agree if you're being rowdy, out of control, drunk or abusive then you should be kicked out but if you're just sitting down having a chat and a quiet social drink, I think that's pretty rude."
Wearing jeans, T-shirt and dress shoes, Mr Hoogland said he had been inside half an hour. When he asked why he had to leave, he said he was told it was because of his hair.
Under WA law, venues are free to set dress codes and refuse entry to patrons but cannot discriminate on the basis of sex, race or religion. So I guess mullet-wearers are not a protected class.

Romney ticket snags a crucial endorsement
Looks like Mitt Romney got the big break he was looking for in this very tight election race. No Warren Buffet nor Bill Gates came forward with public endorsements. It wasn't Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan. It was.....Lindsay Lohan!
She told a crowd of highly absorbent gossip reporters: She's done with Obama and is voting for Romney.
"I just think employment is really important right now," LiLo told E! News ." "So, as of now, Mitt Romney. As of now."
Asked what made her ditch Obama, Lindsay wouldn't elaborate, instead telling anyone who'll listen, "It's a long story, but you're going to have to wait for that."
Back on September 7th, following Obama's DNC speech, Lohan tweeted at the president, telling him he needs to consider cutting taxes "for those that are listed on Forbes as 'millionaires'" too.

Yankee fan was to raise $100 million to buy out Arod's contract
Who says Yankee fans don't have a sense of humour? This pissed off fan is tired of seeingAlex Rodriguez in a Yankee uniform. He notes that his skills are
declining at a pace where his skills will soon reach the low levels that
match his personality. I bet he was doing cartwheels when Arod signed that ridiculous contract.
Here is his plan. If we can match A-Rod's remaining salary, we can offer the Yankees the option of buying out A-Rod, while we donate the same amount to a charity in the Yankees name. This helps us rid ourselves of A-Rod, and helps the Yankees eliminate an aging and declining player, while also helping the Yankees stay under the Luxary Tax. Most importantly, it will donate almost $160 million dollars to charities throughout the country!
So far he hasn't raised a dime.

Lady dies in hospital after accidental soup injection, so much for chicken soup being Jewish penicillin
An 88-year-old woman admitted to the Santa Casa de Barra Mansa hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, died after an employee injected soup into her vein. The hospital board acknowledged the error, but does not believe that this caused the death.
The funeral took place on Tuesday in the chapel of the municipal cemetery. "We are all angry and we want justice to be done and that does not happen to anyone else," said a relative. Ilda Vitor Maciel was hospitalised on Sept. 27.She had had a stroke that paralyzed half his body. Her children say she had shown signs of improvement.
"I talked to her on Sunday, she understood what I was talking to her. I took my hand in her hand and she squeezed with a force," said her grandson Mauro Maciel. "She was injected into the vein. After being injected she began to convulse and put her tongue out. I was frightened and I went and called the nurse," said her daughter.
She was treated, but died 12 hours later. A doctor said the probable cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, when the veins are obstructed the lungs. An official acknowledged the error, but does not believe it is related to the seizure or to the patient's death. They await the outcome of a report, which should be ready in 30 days.

Big Bird is in the top 1%
Even Big Bird has to make some money. The Sesame Workshop's 990 form for the 2010 tax year reveals that Caroll Spinney, the man behind the newsworthy yellow guy and Oscar the Grouch, made $314,072. That's the most recent form available at Guidestar, which covers the tax year ended June 30, 2011. Spinney has played the bird since the show began in 1969, though others have stepped into the role at times.
During last week's presidential debate, Republican Mitt Romney horrified some fans of "Sesame Street" when he said he was going to stop federal subsidies of PBS even though he likes Big Bird. Mitt Romney is not as big of a threat to Big Bird. Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit that produces "Sesame Street," gets very little direct support from the government. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting awarded the show $1.25 million in funding through a National Program Service grant to PBS in fiscal 2011 and $1.4 million under the same program a year later, according to a CPB spokesperson. Those funds represent about 2% of Sesame Workshop's annual budget.
But Sesame depends on PBS to distribute its shows and would be hurt if government funding for public television ended, as Romney and others have advocated.
Sesame Workshop reported more than $132 million in total operating revenue, including $46.9 million in licensing revenue for toys and other merchandise, in 2011. About 35% of its revenue comes from corporate, foundation and government support.

Floridians looking for meningitis outbreak info get phone sex line after Governor gives out wrong number
In an embarrassing mistake, Florida Governor Rick Scott gave out a phone sex hotline number to Floridians seeking information on a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak.
Scott was providing an
update on the outbreak at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday when he announced
what he said was the hotline's toll-free phone line, but gave out the
wrong number.
The governor's office was
alerted by a public radio station in Tampa, WUSF, which was monitoring
the cabinet meeting and posted the number on its website.
The station said it was "quickly notified by a reader that the number instead connected to an adult telephone line."
Callers are greeted with the recording of a woman's voice saying: "Hello boys, thank you for calling me on my anniversary."
I bet mistakes like this happen all the time in both the public and private sector. But why doesn't always end up being an escort service or phone sex? It's never the local hospital or library?
Woman receives phone bill for 12 quadrillion euros; told she can pay in installments
Solenne San Jose, from Pessac outside Bordeaux, said she received a huge shock when she opened the bill for 11,721,000,000,000,000 euros (15.5 quadrillion dollars). This is nearly 6,000 times France's annual economic output.
She had requested her account be closed after losing her job last month. The former teaching assistant said she "almost had a heart attack. There were so many zeroes I couldn't even work out how much it was".
The phone company, Bouygues Telecom, initially told her there was nothing they could do to amend the computer-generated statement and later offered to set up instalments to pay off the bill. In the end, the company admitted the bill should have been for 117.21 euros only, and eventually waived it altogether.
It has also apologised for the gaffe, which it says was down to a printing error and a subsequent misunderstanding between the client and staff at their call centre.

App find you a Jewish date

Are you Jewish and single? There’s an app for that.
Yenta, a new iPhone application that connects Jewish singles based on their location, debuted about a month ago, the latest in niche matchmaking.
Somewhat similar to the gay application Grindr, the free mobile dating service uses GPS technology to allow users to peruse the profiles of nearby Jews. The profile asks questions like “How Jewish are you?” “What’s your shtick?” and “What will impress your mother?”
There are 10,000 users worldwide.
“You can walk into a coffee shop and you can find out who’s Jewish and single around you,” said creator Luba Tolkachyov. “[The dating site] JDate is kind of the traditional model. To be able to log on to [Yenta], you have to go out. There’s no need for the lengthy profile — now we can see who’s single and near us.”

Woman denies ownership of marijuana hidden in her genitals
A Florida woman is accused of smuggling marijuana into jail by hiding it in her genitals. She told authorities she has nothing to do with the drug because she's a medical student on a scholarship, and was trying to keep her friends from getting in trouble.
Vida Golac, 18, of Golden Gate Estates, was arrested by Naples police officers on Thursday. An officer stopped the car Golac was riding in with two others after seeing it drifting it between lanes. During a search of the car, the officer found marijuana in the back of the car near where Golac sat.
Golac said the drug wasn't hers because she's a medical student, and asked the officer to check with the other passengers to see if it was theirs, reports said. The other two passengers denied ownership and were allowed to leave while Golac was arrested.
On the way to the Naples Jail Center, Golac told the officer who arrested her he was "ruining her life" and she would now lose her scholarship — "all for something that wasn't hers." However, jail deputies discovered additional marijuana in Golac's genitals during a strip search. Golac said she was trying to protect the others from getting in trouble.
Toronto Maple Leaf scouting report: Tyler Biggs
The Maple Leafs executed a trade on draft day in 2011 that raised some eyebrows. The Leafs sent the 30th pick which they had acquired from Boston along with the 39th pick to Anaheim for the 21st pick overall. With that pick the Leafs selected Tyler Biggs. I couldn't figure out why it was worth throwing away a second round pick to move up 9 spots in the draft. I was sure Biggs would have still been around with the 39th pick.
Biggs is a big boy, about 6'3" and 220 lb. His one year in college produced only 9 goals in 37 games just 6th best on the team so he is not necessarily a gift goal scorer. He has since left college and is playing Junior hockey with the very strong Oshawa Generals so obviously he is determined to make the NHL and wasn't getting ice time with Miami. He has a good start to the season with 5 goals and 3 assists in his first 7 games which is good for 4th on the Generals in scoring.
Biggs game is more focused on forechecking and grinding down low and in front of the net. It seems that if he can't develop soft hands, he will likely fill a roll on a third line. Hard to justify a first round pick for a grinder. He is playing on a line with Boone Jenner and hopefully it will help his offensive game. So far it seems to be working.
Chinese parents waste $2.2 million trying to get sons into Harvard
To Gerald and Lily Chow, education consultant Mark Zimny must have seemed like the answer to many parents’ prayer: Please let my child get into Harvard University.
The Chows, who lived in Hong Kong, knew little about the US educational system, but they did know that they wanted an Ivy League education for their sons. And they had money to spend on consultants like Zimny, who, they believed, could help make the dream come true.
What transpired, however, turned out to be a cautionary tale for the thousands of parents who are fueling the growing global admissions-consulting industry.
Zimny, whom they met in 2007, had credentials. He had worked as a professor at Harvard. He ran an education consultancy, IvyAdmit. And he had a plan to help the Chows’ two sons, then 16 and 14.
First, Zimny’s company would provide tutoring and supervision while the boys attended American prep schools. Then, according to a complaint and other documents the Chows filed as part of a lawsuit in US District Court in Boston, Zimny said he would grease the admissions wheels, funneling donations to elite colleges while also investing on the Chows’ behalf. According to the suit, Zimny warned the Chows against giving to schools directly. “Embedded racism” made development offices wary of Asian donors, he allegedly advised them; better to use his company as a middleman.
Over two years, the Chows gave IvyAdmit $2.2 million. Now, they are charging that Zimny lied to them repeatedly, committing fraud, breach of contract, unjust enrichment, and several other transgressions — and they want their money back.
Lesson to be learned here. When paying bribes it's good to pay it yourself and not use a middleman. can't stress this enough. You want the credit and to be able to reap the benefits. Zimny will probably end up with the naming rights to the law school and some hot co-eds.

Fan takes rugby ball in the head
You know this didn't happen in the U.S. because the fan getting beaned laughed it off. An American would have immediately hired a lawyer and sued the team and league claiming brain damage, psychological impairment, sexual dysfunction, loss of enjoyment in life and two spilt beers.
14-year-old boy sold mother's jewellery so he could visit brothel
Two 14-year-old German boys have been charged with stealing €3,000 worth of jewellery from one of their mothers, to pay for a visit to a brothel. Police said the boys were still grinning as they were being questioned.
Caught in a "delirium of hormones," as a police statement on Monday put it, the two boys got only a tenth of the value of the jewels when they sold them to a canny gold dealer.
"With their proceeds of €300, the pair didn't just buy pizza, kebabs, and have a game on the fruit machines," police spokesman Ralf Minet said. They also paid two visits to a brothel in the red light district of Karlsruhe, southwest Germany.
Buoyed by the night's experiences, “one could still see a delighted smile on the faces of the thieves during their interrogation," Minet's statement said. "But the little rascals' smiles, who are not unknown to the police by the way, disappeared soon enough, especially because they will have to pay for the reversal of the transaction out of their pocket money," he added. The boys are to be charged for theft.

Winter Classic will likely be cancelled in about 4 weeks

Not sure when the drop dead date is for starting the Winter Classic for 2012 which involves the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs but it is likely in about a month.
The NHL begins hyping the game in early November. The teams release the jerseys to be used and filming of the HBO series 24/7 begins around then. Last year rink preparation at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia began on November 21 and HBO previewed 24/7 on November 25.
Once the Winter Classic is cancelled is there any incentive for an early settlement? I doubt it. What began as a financial dispute has quickly spun into an ideological dispute as the two sides become more entrenched.
Just another sign of how dysfunctional the NHL has become. After losing an entire season, most leagues would avoid cancelling games at all costs. Not the NHL.

Brazil candidate 'handed out cocaine with election leaflets'
Carme Cristina Lima, 32, was running for councillor of Itacoatiara, in Brazil's northern state of Amazonas.
Police became suspicious when they saw a crowd allegedly gathering around Ms
Lima's car on the morning of election day on Sunday.
Officers searched her car and allegedly found hundreds of packets of cocaine attached to the candidate's leaflets with instructions on how to vote for her. "The candidate and another man also fled by car but officers caught up with them. "According to locals, she had been distributing the drugs since early in the morning, on condition that people vote for her."
Ms Lima was arrested for electoral corruption and drug dealing.
Well we certainly know where this candidate stands on drugs. I wonder how her drug budget compared to her budget for signs? This could have been an expensive election campaign. Also a jail term is going to make it difficult to serve on council.

Truck with Meth Lab written on rear window turned out to be meth lab
Just after 3am on Friday morning, Memphis police doing a routine traffic
stop picked up more than just a road violation. Patrol officers stopped
a two door Ford truck with the words 'Meth Lab' in the rear window, for
driving with antique issued licence plates.
Those types of plates only allow you to drive the vehicle on weekends and special occasions. After making the stop, police discovered that the 43-year-old driver had his licence suspended and that he was on probation for manufacturing of meth.
MPD then did a primary search of the vehicle and discovered what police refer to as a "Shake N Bake" plastic bottle, which is commonly used in rolling meth labs. The suspect was immediately placed into custody and was put in the back of a squad car as the officers began the search on the inside of the truck.
After looking in the cab, undercover officers discovered a second "Shake N Bake" and other ingredients for meth inside under the seat. The suspect has been charged with driving with a suspended licence and other traffic violations and charges for manufacturing of meth are pending.

Maple Leaf scouting report: Jesse Blacker
As a Junior, Jesse Blacker played for Own Sound Attack and was the leading scorer among defensemen in his final season. Owen Sound competed in the Memorial Cup twice in the three years. In 2010-11, he scored 10 goals with 44 assists and was +17 in 62 regular season games and was named to the OHL’s Third All-Star team. Blacker was +9 in 22 playoff games and scored 5 goals with 11 assists for the Attack. Blacker, who won a Memorial Cup championship with Windsor in 2009, had 1 assist with an even plus/minus in four 2011 Memorial Cup games with Owen Sound (1-3).
Blacker's puck moving ability made him a 2nd round pick in the 2009 Draft and his experience allowed him to make his transition to professional hockey without significant pressure. Playing on a Marlies team that featured a significant number of veteran pros, Marlies coach Dallas Eakins could afford to use Blacker as necessary to maximize his chances. Blacker responded with a workmanlike campaign, accumulating 16 points in 58 games. He played on the Marlies' second defensive unit.
His strength is his skating ability but likely behind other prospects like Jake Gardner and Morgan Reilly. Still he has the potential to be a top 4 defenseman.

TSA detains possible terrorist armed with flashcards
Nicholas George planned to brush up on his Arabic vocabulary during a flight in August from Philadelphia to California, where he was to start his senior year at Pomona College. So he carried some Arabic-English flashcards in his pocket to study on the plane.
But those flashcards changed George's life far beyond the classroom. The 22-year-old from Pennsylvania is speaking out against what he contends are abuses by federal authorities in airport security measures.
George, a physics major who is considering a career as a U.S. diplomat in the Middle East, is suing the Transportation Security Administration, the FBI and Philadelphia police for jailing him after his flashcards were found and confiscated in a Philadelphia airport screening. His lawsuit, filed in federal court this week, said his four hours in detention, half of that in handcuffs, violated his rights to free speech and protection against unreasonable search and seizure.
The student acknowledged that a few of the vocabulary words, including "bomb" and "terrorism," may have alarmed authorities, but he also said he needed to learn them in order to understand the news of the day in Arabic-language newspapers.
I got some advice for the TSA. If you notice that a traveler is carrying Arabic-English flashcards, and that person already speaks fluent English, he probably is not an Arab terrorist, because he can't speak Arabic. That's what the flashcards are for.
